Methanol is a colourless, flammable liquid and is the simplest alcohol. It is commonly used as a solvent, fuel and antifreeze as well as a starting material for the production of other chemicals.

As a solvent, it is particularly useful for dissolving polar substances like water-soluble salts, sugars and amino acids. It can lower the freezing point of water and can act as a disinfectant. Methanol can also be used as a fuel for fuel cells, which convert the chemical energy in methanol into electrical energy.
