Heptane is a colourless, flammable liquid hydrocarbon. It is a straight-chain alkane composed of seven carbon atoms bonded to 16 hydrogen atoms. Heptane has a low polarity and high solvency power, making it an excellent solvent for many chemicals. It is widely used in the production of rubber, plastics, and pharmaceuticals, where it is required to dissolve various substances.

Heptane can also be used as a fuel additive to improve the combustion efficiency and octane rating of gasoline. It is a highly volatile and low-boiling point compound that can be blended with gasoline to enhance its performance.
